Atlanta, GA— Landis+Gyr announced it has signed an agreement with RSA, The Security Division of EMC, to provide enhanced security for its Gridstream™ smart grid network. Smart grid technologies have the power to transform electricity efficiency and reliability, and building security into the smart grid ecosystem from the start, helps companies address potential vulnerabilities and risks to the system. The engagement between the two companies will build upon Landis+Gyr's expertise in advanced metering infrastructure and applications, and RSA's proven track record in security and information risk management.

Landis+Gyr's Gridstream Radio Frequency (RF) mesh network provides a robust communication infrastructure between the electric utility and smart meters, distribution devices, and home area network equipment. The relationship with RSA allows Landis+Gyr to further enhance the existing security features present in Gridstream. Landis+Gyr has embedded RSA BSAFE® encryption technology into Gridstream RF, providing Landis+Gyr customers with strong data protection mechanisms that can help mitigate the effects of potential attacks on the smart grid infrastructure.

By incorporating RSA public key cryptography cryptography, the Gridstream RF solution delivers a security architecture based on NSA Suite B standard protocols that secures end-to-end data exchange at the application. This builds upon Gridstream's existing network security protocols. This architecture also allows customers the flexibility to configure the right levels of security to make the most efficient use of network traffic.

"Landis+Gyr recognizes the importance of a secure smart grid infrastructure to protect personal data and the integrity of the distribution grid. But that security must fit the utility's needs for standards-based system integration and interoperability. Landis+Gyr is able to offer both, and our relationship with RSA will help enable us to serve the security needs of the market," said Heath Thompson, CTO for Landis+Gyr North America.

Landis+Gyr is also integrating RSA® Key Manager (RKM) into its products to provide customers simple and secure management and long-term vaulting of encryption keys. RKM is engineered to ensure that encryption keys are distributed and vaulted properly and securely throughout their lifecycle. Teams from RSA® Professional Services and Landis+Gyr worked collaboratively to define the overall solution architecture, design and develop the software components, and to implement the solution in Landis+Gyr's development environment.

"The Smart Grid has the possibility of transforming the utilities industry, and it is important that security be built-in early on," said Bret Hartman, CTO, RSA, The Security Division of EMC. "By working collaboratively with an industry-leader like Landis+Gyr, RSA can help provide confidence to both their existing and new customers, and working together, we can help protect our infrastructure during this critical transition to technologically advanced power."
