EMC’s Security Division Launches New RSA Share Project Developer Community to Help Promote Software Security, Enable Innovation and Fight Fraud

RSA Conference® 2009 – San Francisco – April 20, 2009 — In a move to help software developers innovate with confidence and further safeguard their applications from fraudsters, RSA, The Security Division of EMC (NYSE: EMC), has launched the RSA™ Share Project, a new initiative designed to bring world-class security tools within reach of corporate and independent software developers and project leaders. The Share Project features the launch of a new online community designed to provide support, answers and strategies from security experts as well as no-cost access to technology from RSA, one of the world's foremost security companies.

RSA kicks off the Share Project this week at RSA Conference 2009, by offering application developers a no-cost download of the RSA BSAFE Share encryption toolkit, encouraging built-in versus bolted-on security, using tools based on RSA BSAFE® products, the world's most trusted and widely-deployed encryption software.

RSA BSAFE encryption products have a rich heritage in providing essential data privacy, integrity and transactional security in thousands of IT products, with over a billion applications in widespread use today, including the most widely used Internet browser. Where constrained IT budgets and small-scale or non-commercial projects have not, in the past, made it practical to use RSA BSAFE code, the no-cost RSA BSAFE Share software developer kit (SDK) offers another trustworthy and interoperable alternative. This allows project leaders and corporate and independent developers to add and integrate world-class encryption into their own commercial and non-commercial applications and products.

"The global community of technology developers and users find their applications and the information they manage under constant attack by an increasingly sophisticated fraudster underground. We must collaborate as a community to develop a stronger and healthier ecosystem than the fraudsters to stay at least one step ahead," said Chris Young, Senior Vice President of Products at RSA. "The distribution of RSA BSAFE Share products offers essential cryptographic tools - that are wholly interoperable with the existing RSA BSAFE installed base - for corporate and independent developers who are considering application development projects for which the use of licensed commercial code is, today, economically not practical."

The RSA Share Project is designed to arm developers and their managers with the tools and support necessary to protect their products and applications. The software found within the RSA Share Project - based on RSA's industry-leading products, and the tools and utilities RSA uses internally to manage and audit secure application development - will provide a foundational platform to build secure applications. The goal of the RSA Share Project is not merely for the distribution of free technologies, but to promote and build a vibrant community of security-focused engineers, developers and users committed to software security assurance.

"Application end users are becoming increasingly aware of the threats posed by fraudsters, but in the end they want security to be built into products at the time they are developed - not considered as an afterthought," said Eric Baize, Senior Director of the Product Security Office at EMC Corporation. "We have an opportunity to reinvent the way security is applied to enable the safe and frictionless flow of information, but capitalizing on this opportunity demands we collaborate in new and far more constructive ways. This is the goal of the RSA Share Project, inviting developers to participate in an online community with some of the greatest minds in cryptography and software security."

The RSA BSAFE Share software is available for free download on the RSA Share Project community website, offered as SDKs supporting C/C++ and Java. These products are fully interoperable with the thousands of applications already embedded with RSA BSAFE encryption. In the future, the RSA Share Project will provide more functionality above and beyond encryption, allowing members to solve a variety of security problems with no-cost SDKs designed to help ease and manage secure application development.

"The global software developer community embraces a variety of commercial, free and open source development tools, each that excel in specific areas and are each appropriate in specific use scenarios," said Paul Kurtz, Executive Director of the Software Assurance Forum for Excellence in Code (SAFECode), a non-profit organization dedicated to advancing effective software assurance methods. "RSA is offering a very simple way to get proven security capabilities into the hands of those who desire a higher level of security assurance in their application development projects."

The RSA BSAFE Share software is developed and maintained by a dedicated team of RSA engineers and technical support staff. Architecting applications using RSA BSAFE Share security software enables developers to achieve a solid, secure application design without the expense of commercial licenses. RSA BSAFE Share software is also enhanced regularly to address the latest vulnerabilities as well as advancements in cryptographic technology. The software is built on proven industry standards, many of which have been developed and championed by RSA, offering interoperability and ease of integration into new and existing software and device application systems. For applications that require FIPS 140 validated cryptography, RSA will continue to license its own FIPS-compliant version of RSA BSAFE software.

RSA Share Project Programming Contest Launched at RSA Conference 2009

To help drive interest and participation in the RSA Share Project, RSA is also launching a programming contest offering a $10,000 grand prize for the most creative and practical use of RSA BSAFE Share software in a web-based application. Entries will be accepted on the RSA Share Project web site from April 20, 2009 to May 20, 2009, with judging expected to be completed and the winning entry announced by the end of June. Contest rules and entry forms can be found on the RSA Share Project web site.

The RSA Share Project is hosted on the EMC Community Network (ECN). The ECN is a collection of vibrant online communities, including an EMC Developer Network , designed for engineers and developers who work with and/or have special interest in EMC products and technologies. It was created for, and by, software developers seeking collaboration, community, content, and development tools. RSA's dedicated RSA BSAFE engineering team will provide support and advice as active participants in the RSA Share Project, and RSA will work to foster growth of a community of experienced independent RSA BSAFE Share developers who can aid fellow members or work together to safely integrate RSA BSAFE Share encryption into their respective projects. To join the community or to find out more information, please visit www.rsashare.com.
